One of the most common questions I hear is, 'How long until I see results?' Patients understandably want quick results, but hair growth is a slow biological process. Understanding realistic timelines helps patients stay committed to treatment.
Minoxidil typically shows results within 3-4 months of consistent, twice-daily use. Some patients see results sooner, others take longer. It's important to use it consistently—missing applications reduces effectiveness.
Finasteride takes longer. Most patients don't see noticeable results until 6-12 months of treatment. Some continue to see improvement up to 18-24 months. Again, consistency is key.
Low-level laser therapy usually shows results within 3-6 months of consistent treatment (typically 2-3 times per week). Many patients see gradual improvement over time.
PRP therapy often shows initial improvements within 2-3 months, with continued improvement over subsequent months.
Why does it take so long? Hair growth is a slow process. Even after a follicle is stimulated to grow, it takes weeks to months for the new hair to reach visible length. Additionally, hair that's already in the resting phase will continue to shed before new growth appears.
This is why I always counsel patients to be patient and consistent. Stopping treatment prematurely because you haven't seen results in a few weeks is a common reason for treatment failure.
I also recommend taking baseline photos before starting treatment. After 3-4 months, comparing photos often reveals improvement that might not be obvious day-to-day.
The bottom line: hair loss treatment requires patience and consistency. But if you stick with it, results are usually worth the wait.
